He became the fourth Indian to suffer this fate afterSunil Gavaskar (caught off New Zealander Richard Hadlee at Perth onDecember 9,1980) , Ravi Shastri (lbw to Pakistan’s Imran Khan atSharjah on March 22,1985) and Saurav Ganguly (bowled by Sri Lanka’sChaminda Vaas at Mumbai on May 17,1997).Vaas became the second bowler to get a wicket off the first ball ofthe match on three occasions. He had earlier dismissed Saurav Ganguly(see above) and New Zealand’s Chris Nevin (at Sharjah on April17,2001) off the first ball of the match. The only other bowler to doso on three separate occasions is Australia’s Craig McDermott. Howeverit must be noted that McDermott took a wicket off his third ball(first legitimate ball) on one occasion. The other bowlers to get awicket off the first ball of the match on more than one occasion areWest Indian Andy Roberts, Pakistan’s Wasim Akram and New Zealand’sChris Cairns with each performing this feat on two occasions.Saurav Ganguly was dismissed for a duck after facing 16 balls. Hemissed the Indian record by just one ball. Eknath Solkar had taken 17balls for his duck against England at the Oval on July 15, 1974.Incidentally the ODI record is held by West Indian Phil Simmons (0 in23 balls) against New Zealand at Margoa on October 26,1994. Hisinnings was the second highest by any Indian in the nineties afterKrish Srikkanth s 99 against England at Cuttack on December 27,1984(Navjot Sidhu had also made 98 against West Indies at Sharjah onOctober 19,1992).Romesh Kaluwitharana was getting dismissed without scoring for the22nd time in his career and fifth time against India. He now enjoysthe dubious distinction of aggregating most ducks in a career againstIndia – five in 27 innings. Kalauwitharana was earlier level with fourducks with Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi.Kaluwitharana now has a duck frequency of 13.84 % of his total innings- highest for any batsman who has played at least 100 innings at thislevel. Withthis, he also completed the coveted double of 1000 runs and 100wickets.
